Join Ursula on a walking tour to learn about two very important religious buildings and see what Ceausescu really did about demolishing part of Bucharest.

Discover how an engineer succeeded in preserving some, by moving them for several meters.

Hidden by blocs to make way for Ceausescu’s new buildings, two old monasteries survived the demolitions of the 80’s.

Mihai Voda, among the oldest of the city, dating back to 1594, was moved 289 meters from it’s original location to make room for the new Communists apartment blocs. Seat of the Mihai Viteazu Knights Order has neo-bizantine portraits of the Romanian Royal Family made by Costin Petrescu during the fascist era of General Antonescu.

Antim monastery, on the other hand, is well preserved. Built in 1715, provided with the first public library and a free public school for the poor. Here, the holy oil used in all religious ceremonies is consecrated.

      Meeting point: metrò station Izvor

      Ending close to Unirii.

      Timing: 10.30-13:00 (meet time 10:20)

Cost: 80 Ron per person (min 8)

How does book club work? Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:

      • We read a wide variety of books and meet monthly to discuss them... and yes we do discuss them (and then we talk about everything else under the sun)

      • You are welcome to come even if you didn't finish the book (but expect spoilers... if it's a murder mystery we will tell you who did it)

      • You are encouraged to come even if you didn't like the book (because sometimes that makes the best conversation)

      • Paper books: titles may be available in Bucharest — try one of the bigger Carturesti bookstores, or the Nautilus near Kiseleff Park, or you can order from amazon.co.uk or bookdepository.com

      • E-books: note that titles from Amazon are are sometimes available in UK or USA but not both. You can also try Apple ibooks or www.kobo.com or ebooks.com or  www.okian.ro or in Romania: elefant.ro (Select “carte straina” [foreign authors] to the left of the page and it will list all books minus Romanian)
      • You are welcome to read in your native language, if available; sometimes you have to search by author because the title will be different

Join IWA to celebrate International Women's Day

March 8th, International Women's Day, has been marked around the world for more than 100 years with a wide range of themes, protests and celebrations. In Romania, Women's Day is a special day to celebrate all the women in your life. People give cards, flowers, and gifts, and entertain with special dinners and parties. (Most Romanians celebrate the day as Mother's Day, though by law it is still officially on the first Sunday in May.)
