    National Holiday

    www.publicholidays.ro:

"Romania inherited Labor Day, on 1 May, from the days of Communist domination, but unlike some other states, they have not discarded it or looked upon it with disdain due to such past association.

Instead, Labor Day is a time when everyone gets off work and finds one of several popular ways to enjoy themselves for a day or for several days in a row.

Some camp out by the sea and swim or play a guitar by the sandy beach at Vama Veche. Others visit the “posh” concerts, resorts, and clubs in nearby Mamaia. While still others head to the mountains to hike, picnic, grill meat, and stay at fancy, breathtakingly scenic resorts.

It’s not about Socialist goals or protesting for higher wages for most people in Romania today. It’s all about spring, the opening of the beach season, and spending quality time with family."

April showers bring May flowers - and what better place to admire them than in the exquisite surroundings of Cantacuzino Castle, nestled in the verdant mountains at Busteni.

The adventure begins bright and early at Gara du Nord with a train ride. On arrival, we'll walk 700m to the castle, and have time to recover before our guided tour of the property and viewing of "Women Power in Art", an exhibition featuring 110 artists, all women, including IWA member Dana Marinescu. We'll restore our energy with lunch at Canta Cuisine (or pack a picnic) -  then relax on the terrace or take a walk before returning to Bucharest.

Come prepared for a little bit of exercise - we'll be covering all distances on foot on arrival in Busteni.

Kindly enroll and make your payment by April 16th in order to take the train together.

    • Your registration will be confirmed on receipt of payment and is considered binding. Please inform the organizer of any changes to your plans at least 3 days in advance (no later than April 28) to receive a refund and allow someone from the waiting list to take your place. Please note that no refunds will be made thereafter.
You may make travel and lunch arrangements on your own after April 16th.

Nowhere else in Romania has a hotel come to play such an important role in the political and social life of its people as the Athenee Palace. From crown heads to Second World War spies, diplomats or international journalists, the stories abound.

Did you know it was a safe shelter for war correspondents and German officers during the two world wars? The building itself was treated as an espionage hotspot. It accommodated prime ministers, writers and other important personalities.

Did you know it housed the ‘La Ionica’ barber shop/hairdressing salon? Ionica was the personal hairdresser to King Carol II, which made it accessible only by the elite of Bucharest.

Please join us for some fabulous stories, a tour by the famous hotel concierge Vasile Descultescu, who is the Vice-President  of Clefs D’Or Romania, and to see one of Bucharest’s landmarks, Le Diplomat Ballroom. After the tour we will relax with our host Mierla Burlacu, the Hotel Marketing and PR Manager, drink coffee and indulge in a surprise created by the hotel’s Pastry Chefs.

          Coordinated by Gillian

Note: limited to IWA members (your out-of-town guests welcome)
The tour is limited to 15 people, but will hopefully be repeated soon.

"WHAT IF I FLY" Porcelain Stories is a studio that creates porcelain jewelry and porcelain artworks.  Founded in Bucharest in 2016 by cultural manager Anca Negescu and contemporary artist Anca Popescu, What If I Fly combines art and design, promoting the concept of art jewelry. Each object is hand-crafted from porcelain and painted with gold, platinum and porcelain colors, some pieces being mounted in silver. The studio’s signature objects are the porcelain doll pendants, 4, to 10cm tall, with movable arms and legs.

During your visit, you will see a selection of handcrafted porcelain art objects and art jewelry signed by contemporary artist Anca Popescu, the creative director of What If I Fly.

The same creative space also has an intimate exhibition space and acts as a contemporary jewelry gallery. The temporary exhibition hosted in the space between May 8th - May 17th is entitled “Together We Are Stronger”.

For this project, three of Mircea Moroianu’s drawings were used as a starting point. They were transformed into silver jewelry by Contemporia (Ioana Streza & Alexandru Burlap). The exhibition shows each piece of jewelry next to the original drawing and sketches of how it was transformed from a two-dimensional image into a three-dimensional object.

          Bulgarian Roses Trip

Join IWA on this exciting trip through ages, cultures and traditions, and experience the magic of Bulgarian rose gold! We had a fabulous time last year!

In the land of Thracian kings and ancient civilizations, in the valley of wine and tombs, is hidden one of the most precious Bulgarian treasures: Rosa Damascena. The Bulgarian Rose Valley is one of the few places on earth blessed with perfect conditions for growing oil-bearing roses. In this region the production of rose oil dates back to the 16th century. Each year during the months of May and June, the Rose carnival presents the old customs of flower gathering and oil making – traditions saved to this very day.

          We will

We had a fun creative morning last time we visited Art Time Atelier de Creatie  — so let's do it again! They have a wide variety of fine ceramics for us to chose from — bowls, cups, platters, vases, objet d'arts and more— and lots of help and inspiration to go around.

Cost: 50 lei or more (depending on the object you chose)
It will take one week to glaze the ceramics in the kiln, then we can pick them up.
          Participants: Minimum 12 / Maximum 30

          Open to IWA members only

          Coordinated by Terry

Note: Art Time also offers workshops in making your own pottery, by hand or own the wheel. Please let Terry know if you are interested in being part of this group (which will be scheduled for a later date.)

Join us for a day trip to two wonderful places close to Bucharest. Learn all about them so you can go back with family and friends.

Snagov Monastery is an ancient monastery on an island, an "architectural jewel of feudal art," and possible burial site of the torso of Vlad Ţepeş.

Mogoșoai Palace is the architectural legacy of a great prince, Brancoveanu and of Martha Bibescu, one of Europe's most fascinating personalities.

We've decided to travel together by bus with Silvia M (our volunteer professional guide), because we'll be making different stops. Please pack a picnic lunch! (You also have the option of driving and finding your way to us.)

cost for bus & entrance fees: 80 lei (requires 16 participants)

We'll leave from Baneasa Mall at 9am and return in the early afternoon

          organizer: Silvia

          About our Club:

          • You're invited to bring a project you are working on and chat while you get some work done. Usually, this is NOT a formal class, but there is plenty of inspiration to be found with this friendly group. We may occasionally teach each other a new skill or work on a project together.
          • We rotate homes and meet most (but not all) Mondays. We welcome both IWA members and friends. See tentative schedule below.
